Woolworths - King Shaka Airport

1. The Project Brief
Following the successful delivery of Cape Town International Airport, Woolworths appointed Andrew Gill to lead the turnkey construction of its new travel retail store at the greenfield King Shaka International Airport (La Mercy) in KwaZulu-Natal. The project required complete interior construction, architectural fit-out, and MEP systems integration from a raw bare-shell concrete unit in the new central passenger terminal.
2. Site Constraints & Regulatory Mandates
The site was located inside a newly commissioned international airport facility operating under commissioning trials. Contractors had to navigate complex ACSA airside security protocols, strict fire-safety compartmentalization standards, and tight acoustic integration with airport public address and emergency warning systems.
3. Specialized Trades & Engineering Deployed
4. Programme Duration & Shift Execution
A rapid 3-week construction window coordinated directly with airport commissioning authorities. Teams worked continuous overnight shifts to synchronize with the airport grand opening schedule.
5. Verified Outcome & Handover Quality
Delivered fully certified, stocked, and ready for operations on day one of King Shaka Airport’s official public opening. The project reinforced Woolworths’ trust in Andrew Gill as their preferred national contractor for complex aviation retail deployments.
"Andrew Gill has been one of our preferred contractors appointed by Woolworths since 2009 to construct some of our company's flagship stores and his involvement has been key in the modernisation program of our older stores. His consulting and construction company has been involved with our enterprise in the realisation and success of the Cape Town and King Shaka (KZN) Airport retail Stores from inception where he completed the turnkey projects with a high level of professionalism and business acumen under difficult time constraints ahead of the Soccer World cup. His company's attention to detail is highlighted in all areas of involvement and it has been visible in the finished products that they deliver. His Construction company was also involved in our recently acquired Country Road Department Store brand where Andrew oversaw the installation of the first store in the V & A Waterfront. The project was successfully handed over ahead of schedule. His company has raised the benchmark in some trades and he has provided our corporate image with the necessary finished product. They have worked in various provinces for our company and have never disappointed our expectations. Difficult situations are always met with positive and pro-active impetus and we have come to rely on their professionalism. We have seen a company with strong support teams of effective contractors who work collaboratively towards our common goal. We have gained confidence in their company to utilise the most competent teams to get the job done! I am comfortable to give high recommendation to any enterprise or person who may require his services."
